Siem Reap, hotels, restaurants, Angkor Wat, attractions and travel information.
The City Siem Reap is five kilometers from Angkor Wat and 10 kilometers from the Tonle Sap Lake.
From 1975 under the regime of the Khmer Rouge were the inhabitants of the city, like those of nearly all other cities in Cambodia, abducted for forced labor.
After the victory of the Vietnamese troops in 1979, they returned to their city. Until the early 1990s, Siem Reap was the target of raids from in the forest displaced Khmer rouge troops.
For years, the residents had to protect the city center with barricades. The last raid, by a battalion of the city, had been in the year 1993, since then it is quiet.
From the mid-1990, then, a number of older hotels, built at the beginning of the 20th century, reopened.
Almost the whole town consists of hotels and restaurants, from simple backpacker hostel up to the 5 Star Luxury Hotel.
Since the beginning of 2000 there is an inexhaustible selection of rooms. Since that time, Siem Reap and Angkor Wat presented as an emerging tourist destination.
